Collection of Monthly Blood Supply Monitoring Data
The National Blood Data Resource Center began collecting blood supply monitoring data on a monthly basis in January 2000 under an agreement with the Department of Health and Human Services. A nationally representative sample of 26 blood collection centers was selected by stratified, random sampling.
These blood centers report monthly blood component distribution and inventory data, as well as additional relevant information, to NBDRC by the tenth day of the following month.
The rapid reporting and analysis of such data should enable relatively early detection of potential blood shortages, and allow for a better understanding of seasonal and regional shortages.
